2007 Initiatives

In an effort to understand and deliver the skills development needs of Small Micro Enterprises (SMEs) in the broader Banking sector, BANKSETA conducted a needs analysis. Marketing for Small businesses, Financial Skills, Strategy, Innovation and Corporate Governance were identified as key areas for SMEs. BANKSETA has held Workshops around the country during 2007 on.

Building Business Innovation

  • Marketing for Small Businesses:

     
    BANKSETA and Cornerstone Performance Solutions conducted half day workshops for skills development in marketing. This enabled small and micro enterprises (SME’s) to view the benefits of marketing in their business within the ambit of the National Credit Act.
     
    Henk Koekemoer presented the workshops. He is a highly experienced trainer and BANKSETA accredited Assessor and Facilitator. He holds a BA (Education) from the University of Pretoria and has certificates in Sales Skills, Advanced Sales Skills and in Basic Business Principles. Henk has an intimate understanding of the Microfinance industry and is a regular trainer for Microfinance organisations. His most recent training credentials include the National Credit Act and the Early Debit Order System.
     
    The workshops provided microfinance organisations with effective marketing understanding by covering the following:
  • Understanding how to apply the fundamentals of marketing in your business
  • Identifying your target market and knowing what your customers want
  • Using competitor intelligence to your advantage
  • Decide how you are going to compete
  • Understanding how to drive customer service for client retention

    Financial Skills for Small Businesses:

     
    The BANKSETA and the Institute of Bankers in South Africa offered half day workshops on financial skills to build capacity in small businesses in the broader banking and micro-finance sector.
     
    Basic Financial Skills are essential for every entrepreneur. Financial information provides managers and owners with vital information regarding the performance of their business and assists in making financial decisions. Understanding and interpreting key financial principles is crucial to the successful management of a small business.
     
    Workshop Outcomes
    By the end of this workshop the learners would be able to:

  • Recognise the value of working capital management
  • Identify and describe the role and importance of financial leverage, liquidity and profitability of a small business

    Strategy for Small Businesses:

     
    The BANKSETA and the Institute of Bankers in South Africa partnered once again during August 2007, to offer half day workshops on strategy to build capacity in small businesses in the broader banking and micro-finance sector.
     
     
    Dr Marius Pretorius presented the workshops. Dr Pretorius is an Associate Professor in Venture Failure, Turnaround and Strategy at the University of Pretoria and has expertise in the following areas:
  • Business turnaround strategies
  • Facilitation, strategic planning and mapping
  • Conflict resolution
  • eativity development to enhance innovation within organisations
  • Valuation of ventures, opportunity and risk analysis
  • Venture growth and start-up planning
  • Workshop Outline
    Pitched at NQF (National Qualifications Framework) Level 5, the ideal audiences for this training intervention are middle to senior management.

    Value Added Tax (VAT) Compliance

    As a direct result of the legislative requirements as prescribed in the National Credit Act (NCA) in June 2007, Micro Finance Lenders now have to register for Value Added Tax (VAT) compliance with the South African Receiver of Revenue (SARS).
    To this end the BANKSETA sponsored MFSA who contracted with Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) to compile a simplified guide on VAT for Micro Finance SME’S. These workshops were held the major centres in order to train the owners/accounting officers.Click here to download the slide presentation.
