New Hope through BANKSETA’s Letsema Learnership Project
The BANKSETA’s flagship Letsema Learnership Project has provided unemployed young Black South Africans with hope.
This Bankseta initiative was launched in 2004 in an attempt for stakeholders to meet Finance Sector Charter targets for human resources, the first three phases of the project have already been rolled out nationally. “Some 1 100 learners have been recruited for Letsema IV, bringing the total number of learners recruited during the first four phases of the project to 3 562,” says BANKSETA Learnerships Manager, Christine Fritz.

After matriculating in 2000, Letsema III learner, Lerato Makhofola, spent five years trying to find employment. Lerato writes, “One of my friends, who had been accepted onto the Letsema II Learnership, gave me the application forms for Letsema III.
I applied and I was accepted. ”. Makhofola was initially placed with Absa in Bloemfontein. He has, however, recently been transferred to Absa’s Botshabelo branch, where he serves as a consultant. “I help clients with their queries and I open up bank accounts for them,” he explains. Grateful for the opportunity that he has been afforded by the Letsema III Learnership,
he felt compelled to express his appreciation in a letter of thanks to the BANKSETA.

“I felt that I would be committing a sin if I did not tell you about the great work you have done in my life. I’m blessed that you were the first person to introduce me to the learnership. Perhaps you won’t notice, but you have done an amazing job in my life. I have decided to live by your words that one has to pay a price for one’s success. I’m still going strong in the learnership. There is a great chance of being employed by Absa and it is thanks to the BANKSETA for giving me a chance to prove myself. Guys, you really gave us a light in the dark tunnel that the youth of South Africa were going through. If I were to tell you how wonderful this learnership is, I would have to write a book of 500 pages. All I wanted to say is thank you very much.” Makkhofola will “graduate” from the Letsema Learnership in January 2007.

Letsema IV will be rolled out in all nine provinces in 15 sites in February 2007. Indicative of the success of the Letsema Learnership, learners have enjoyed a high 77% placement rate. “We are delighted to see that the results of Letsema II project is higher than any other year whereby following six months after the project ended, 80.5% of those learners have been placed,” she informs.
